VHS to DVD Transfer and Compression

February 24th, 2008

Kilroy Films now offers VHS to DVD transfer. We’re also offering compression services.

Why go to the trouble to convert to DVD?

  1. DVDs weigh less
  2. DVDs take up far less space
  3. VHS tapes are becoming outmoded and many people are finding themselves without the players to enjoy them
  4. Quality stays consistent over time
  5. Can easily be transfered from DVD to computer or hard drive

Here’s a more detailed list of some great reasons to convert your VHS library to DVD (or other digital media)

1. Videotapes will physically deteriorate in a relatively short period of time. After 10-15 years of storage the quality of video decreases dramatically. DVD is designed to last for generations without any loss of video and audio quality.

2. DVD is convenient and fun to watch. No wiring and complicated camera connections needed. No frustrating tape fast forwarding and rewinding. A DVD movie is divided into chapters, and we can create a custom on-screen TV menu for easy navigation.

3. Use chapters on a DVD to quickly scan forward or reverse to your favorite family memory within a single DVD.

4. DVDs are easy and affordable to share. All family members will be happy to receive your latest home video. Great for weddings, celebrations, parties, sports and travel videos.

5. Sometimes, you are not able to watch your 8mm videotapes because the old video camera is broken and you are using a MiniDV camcorder now. We can transfer practically any videotape format to DVD.

PMW EX1 Overcrank and timelapse tests

February 18th, 2008

I took the Sony PMW EX1 out today and did some tests within the S&Q menu.

Overall, I was very happy with the results.

The two overcranked files are a bit big due to the added fps…so you may need to wait a little longer for those to start to stream.

The timelapse were shot at 1080 30p at an accumulation of 1 frame per second (for the clouds) and 2 frames per second (for the street corner). This is all done through the S&Q sub-menu in the video menu on the PMW EX1.

Enjoy and let me know if you have any comments or questions.

First Shoot with the Sony PMW EX1

February 5th, 2008

Kilroy Films has gone HD!

We had our first shoot in HD using the Sony PMW EX1 yesterday and the image quality is outstanding. It was a home tour for West Valley Home Tours and if I get permission from the client, I’ll post some stills and/or video from the shoot in a bit.

The Sony PMW EX1 is capable of shooting in several different resolutions and frame rates. One very nice thing is that there’s only one version of the cam…not an NTSC version and PAL version. That makes the ability to shoot overseas productions or meet the needs of a PAL consumer as easy as changing a menu setting.

Here’s a punch list of available shooting modes:

NTSC setting
HQ mode: 1920 x 1080/59.94i, 29.97P, 23.98P, 1280 x 720/59.94P, 29.97P, 23.98P
SP mode: 1440 x 1080/59.94i

PAL setting
HQ mode: 1920 x 1080/50i, 25P, 1280 x 720/50P, 25P
SP mode: 1440 x 1080/50i
